President Bola Tinubu has formally forwarded the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026 to the House of Representatives, seeking lawmakers’ approval for the establishment of state police services across the country.
The bill, transmitted in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary, proposes amendments to the 1999 Constitution to create a legal framework for the operation of state police as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system.
In his communication to the House, President Tinubu said the proposed legislation builds on previous work already undertaken by lawmakers and introduces additional safeguards to ensure the effective operation of a dual policing system involving both the federal and state governments.
He explained that the amendment would provide a constitutional basis for creating state police services capable of responding more effectively to the country’s growing security challenges.
According to the President, the bill is a key component of his administration’s broader security reform agenda aimed at improving public safety and enhancing law enforcement across the federation.
Tinubu urged members of the House of Representatives to give the proposal speedy consideration, expressing confidence that the legislation would receive prompt approval.
The President noted that the proposed framework would enable Nigeria to establish a more responsive policing structure while ensuring adequate constitutional safeguards for both federal and state authorities.
The latest development comes less than two weeks after the Senate passed a similar constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of state police nationwide. The proposal secured the support of more than two-thirds of senators, satisfying the constitutional requirement for amendment.
If the House of Representatives also approves the bill and it subsequently receives the endorsement of the required number of state Houses of Assembly, Nigeria will move closer to establishing state police services as part of ongoing efforts to address insecurity across the country.
