The Federal Government has officially renamed the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Tinubu, describing the ₦15 trillion project as the realisation of a vision the President held nearly three decades ago.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this on Thursday during a media briefing, saying the decision was reached after consultations within the ministry to honour Tinubu through the flagship road project.
Umahi said the renaming followed deliberations with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, all of whom agreed to name the entire highway after the President.
“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works… we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is a dream that Mr President had about 27 years ago,” Umahi said.
The coastal highway, which connects Lagos to Calabar across several coastal states, is designed to serve as a major transport corridor that will boost trade, tourism and regional integration. Some sections of the project are already nearing completion.
Government officials say the road will cut travel time, strengthen connectivity and open up investment opportunities along Nigeria’s coastline.
The project has, however, remained controversial since construction began in March 2024, with critics raising concerns over its cost, procurement process, alignment, and the demolition of properties along the route.
The Federal Government has continued to defend the project, insisting due process was followed and that its long-term economic benefits will outweigh the challenges of execution.
Once completed, the ₦15 trillion highway is expected to rank among Nigeria’s largest road infrastructure projects, improving access to ports, boosting interstate commerce and drawing investment to coastal communities.
