The four-year leadership crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) may finally be heading towards resolution, as rival leadership claimants, Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) and Tajudeen Baruwa, have agreed to settle their differences through dialogue.
The agreement followed a peace and reconciliation meeting held in Abuja and convened by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), where both camps committed to resolving the dispute amicably and restoring unity within the transport union.
Sources close to the meeting described it as the most significant breakthrough since the crisis began, noting that both men pledged to keep engaging in dialogue to settle all outstanding issues.
A source at the meeting said discussions were frank and productive, with both parties agreeing that the reconciliation process should continue without conditions.
“There is now a shared commitment to dialogue. Both parties have agreed that the reconciliation process should continue without conditions, and there is optimism that this marks the beginning of a new chapter for the union,” the source said.
The NLC is expected to hold further talks with both camps to consolidate the peace process and strengthen unity within NURTW. The labour centre has intervened repeatedly in the dispute over the years in a bid to end the divisions that have weakened the union.
The crisis dates back to 2022, when Baruwa was elected National President at the NURTW National Delegates’ Conference. Akinsanya’s faction rejected the outcome, leading to parallel leadership structures, prolonged litigation, and deep divisions among members — prompting several NLC-led interventions to restore stability.
