At least 13 people were killed on Sunday night in coordinated attacks across three council areas of Plateau State Jos South, Mangu and Riyom as gunmen struck communities and a passenger vehicle in quick succession.
Nine of the victims were commuters travelling to Jos when suspected terrorists ambushed their vehicle at Dungus community in Jos South Local Government Area around 9:40 p.m.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders (BYM), who confirmed the Dungus incident, said the gunmen opened fire directly on the vehicle, killing several passengers on the spot. He disclosed that a member of Operation Rainbow was among those killed, describing the attack as a painful loss.
Tengwong said other passengers who sustained gunshot wounds were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some later succumbed to their injuries.
A resident of the community, Musa Dauda, corroborated the account, saying several of the injured died while undergoing treatment, while others remain hospitalised.
In a separate attack, suspected terrorists struck Vodni community in Pushit District, Mangu Local Government Area, overnight, killing two people. Four others were injured and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Mangu town.
A similar attack was recorded in Riyom Local Government Area, where two persons were killed at Tahoos community around the same time.
As of press time, security operatives had not responded to requests for comment on the attacks.
