Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) will record a significant improvement in the South-East during the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi said Tinubu would receive considerably more votes from the region than the APC secured in the 2023 presidential election.
The minister made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, while discussing the APC’s growing political presence in the South-East and its prospects ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Umahi, he could not say with certainty whether the APC would win all five South-East states, but he was convinced that Tinubu would attract a much larger number of votes across the region.
“I will not tell you whether we win the five votes of the South-East or not, but the President is going to harvest a lot of votes in the South-East. It can never be the same like it was before,” he said.
When asked whether he believed the APC could win all five states in the region — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo — Umahi expressed optimism that the party would achieve the feat.
“My faith is telling me we’ll win the five states,” the minister said.
Umahi also played down the potential threat posed by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 election.
He argued that Obi was not the only presidential candidate from the South-East and noted that several other candidates would also be seeking votes from the region.
“By the way, it is not only Peter Obi that is from the South-East that is contesting. We have about three or four other presidential candidates who are contesting,” Umahi said.
He added that the Labour Party and other political parties had candidates in the race, including a female presidential candidate.
“So, Peter Obi is not a threat as far as I am concerned,” the minister stated.
Umahi’s comments come amid growing political activities and realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with political parties intensifying efforts to secure support across the country.
The South-East is expected to remain an important political battleground in the 2027 presidential contest, particularly as the APC seeks to strengthen its support base in the region and improve on its previous electoral performance.
