President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met privately with the Chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Jim Ovia, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Ovia, who is also the founder of Zenith Bank, was received in a closed-door session. The details of the discussion have not been made public.
The meeting comes as the federal government works to strengthen the implementation of its student loan scheme and widen access to tertiary education.
NELFUND, established under the Student Loans Act, provides interest-free loans to students in public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The loans cover institutional tuition fees and a monthly upkeep stipend for living expenses. Although the loans carry no interest, beneficiaries are legally required to repay them.
Meanwhile, NELFUND has cautioned students against taking loans they do not need, stressing that the scheme is voluntary and designed for those who cannot afford the cost of their education.
The fund said students who can pay their school fees and other expenses without assistance are not required to apply.
NELFUND made this known in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
