The Sokoto State Government has sealed the campaign office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the move was necessary to protect lives and property following a recent disturbance involving party supporters and miscreants.
Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Dantsoho, announced the development in a statement on Monday.
Dantsoho said a review of the certificate of occupancy and other relevant documents showed that the building belongs to Savannah Bank, with no change in ownership to date.
“Following a review of the certificate of occupancy and other relevant documents, we discovered that this property belongs to the Savannah Bank, and that ownership has not changed as of today,” he said.
He added that the state government has written to the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), custodian of the property, to confirm its current ownership, but has yet to get a response.
Government officials reportedly arrived at the office in the early hours of the day and locked it up.
ADC members in the state have, however, described the action as intimidation and an attempt to stifle the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. They accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state government of trying to silence opposition voices.
