The deposed Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, has taken Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to court in a bid to stop the government from installing another monarch on the traditional stool.
Oloyede, who was removed from the throne after his conviction in the United States on fraud-related offences, claims the state government deposed him without following due process.
He is the second claimant in suit number HIF/50/2026, filed at the Osun State High Court. In it, he asks the court to restrain the governor and the other defendants from taking any step to fill the vacant stool until the substantive suit is determined.
Three other claimants, Prince Oyewusi Adewusi, Prince Isaac Adewuni and Prince Abiodun Oyetoro, are also in the suit, filing for themselves and on behalf of other members of the Latimogun Royal Family of the Aribile Ruling House of Ipetumodu.
Besides Adeleke, the defendants are the Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice; the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Chief Afolabi Adedeji, the Asalu of Ipetumodu and head of the kingmakers; Chief Adesoye Babalola, the Malefon of Ipetumodu; and the Ife North Local Government.
In a motion on notice dated September 16, 2026, Oloyede is seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants, either by themselves or through their agents, from taking any step to fill the stool or appoint anyone in his place pending the final determination of the suit.
The motion also referred to a report in The Guardian of May 11, 2026, which alleged that he had been deposed through an instrument purportedly signed by the governor on May 7, 2026, without any lawful basis. He further claimed that the first to third defendants never informed him of any wrongdoing before the publication and the purported deposition order.
The matter came up on Monday before Justice Dapo Adeniyi at the Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife, but was adjourned until January 21, 2027, over issues with the service of hearing notices.
