African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused an aide to President Bola Tinubu, Sunday Asefon, and the president’s son-in-law, Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, of being behind the attack on him in Ekiti State.
Sowore made the claim in a statement on his 𝕏 handle, where he recounted his encounter with suspected political thugs in the state. He alleged that the thugs, mobilised by the two men, sought to intimidate and silence him over his persistent criticism of the Tinubu administration.
He urged the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to immediately investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
In the statement, Sowore said fresh information from his sources identified Asefon Sunday Dayo, a former National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President and Special Adviser to the President on Student Engagement, as one of the alleged ringleaders of the October 30 attack on him and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti.
He claimed his sources named Asefon’s bodyguard, Ayodeji Akintade Ifeoluwa, as one of those deployed to lead the assault, alleging that he was the man in a green polo shirt who used a machete on members of his team. Sowore added that Sola Adenijo, also known as “Solar,” was identified as a principal coordinator of the armed attack.
The AAC candidate also implicated Ojo, the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and husband of Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, claiming that sources told him Ojo mobilised Adenijo for the operation.
According to Sowore, Asefon was in Ekiti on Thursday, October 29, for a #CityBoys Movement event. He alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Chief Security Officer to Governor Biodun Oyebanji, CSP Ayodele Akinlua, alerted people connected to the event about his presence in the state, after which a prolonged meeting was held where the attack was planned.
“Asefon Sunday Dayo previously threatened to attack me when he was NANS President. We survived the brutal attack, and the revolutionary struggle must continue,” Sowore said.
As of the time of filing this report, Asefon had not responded to the allegations.
