Abia State Governor Alex Otti joined prominent Nigerians on Thursday to pay tribute to late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo at his burial in Arochukwu, Abia State.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, Otti described Ekubo’s passing as a profound loss — not only to Abia State but to Nigeria’s entertainment industry and to millions of fans across the world.
Speaking at the funeral service held at the Mary Slessor Technical College Ground in Arochukwu Local Government Area, the governor said Ekubo was more than an entertainer. He described the late actor as a cultural ambassador who elevated the image of both his home state and the nation on the global stage.
“Alex possessed that rare gift of connecting with people through his performances. He brought joy to homes, inspired young people, and demonstrated that with discipline, dedication, and excellence, greatness is achievable,” Otti said.
He added that Ekubo’s story remained a testament to the resilience and creativity that define the people of Abia State, noting that the actor wore his roots with pride and never distanced himself from his origins. The governor urged the family and the entertainment industry to find strength in God during their period of grief.
In his sermon titled “Please Forgive God,” Resident Pastor of Streams of Joy, Umuahia, Eno Jerry-Eze, reminded mourners that nothing occurs outside God’s knowledge and called on the congregation to reflect on their lives in preparation for eternity.
Ekubo’s elder sister, Kelechi Ekubo-Otusi, described her brother as humble, loving, and deeply devoted to God and humanity.
The late actor died in May at the age of 40 following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. He is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
The funeral was attended by top government officials, Nollywood stars, and sympathisers from across the country.
