South-West’s security network codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ will flush out criminals from the region, the National Youth Council of Nigerian(NYCN), has said.
The umbrella body of youths in the country noted that the initiative would help tackle kidnapping, armed robberies and other elements of criminality in the region.
According to the NYCN, the initiative will help secure the Yoruba nation.
NYCN’s Vice President, Southwest, Comr. Olamide Odumosu, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
Amotekun is a security outfit jointly established by governors of the six states that make up the Southwest.
They are Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti.
The inauguration will be presided over by Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who is the Chairman, Southwest Governors’ Forum.
Odumosu lauded the governors of the zone for coming up with the initiative, calling on governors of other zones to embrace similar initiative.
He noted that the security outfit would have far-reaching effects if other zones replicated it.
Odumosu said: “We must commend the governors of the six states of the South West for coming up with this initiative.
“We believe that Operation Amotekun will address kidnapping, armed robberies and help flush out criminal elements that had held the region hostage.
“It will help secure the Yoruba nation and ensure the safety of its people.
People of the region will be able to go freely about their daily duties without fears.
“It is our belief at the National Youth Council of Nigeria that this Security initiative by the governors of the South West will have far-reaching effect if governors of other zones replicate it.
Operation Amatekun was conceived out of the need to jointly tackle increasing criminal activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery, in the region.
