Five-time Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo is set to make history on Tuesday as she becomes the first African musician and first Black African to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Benin-born artist, who has built a career spanning over 40 years, was once described by Time magazine as “Africa’s premier diva.”
Hollywood Walk of Fame producer, Ana Martinez, said Kidjo’s induction reflects her global impact on music and culture.
“Angelique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents,” Martinez said in a news release. “We are proud to honour her as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world.”
The 66-year-old singer will be joined at the ceremony by Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe and record producer Harvey Mason Jr.
Kidjo, reacting when the honour was first announced last year, said she was confident she would not be the last African woman to achieve the feat.
“I may be the first African female singer to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but I am convinced that I will not be the last. Many others will follow, and that fills my heart with joy,” she told AFP.
