Security operatives attached to the Orerokpe Police Division in Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State, have come under fresh scrutiny after allegedly opening fire on an unarmed civilian in the Okudjere-Ovu community.
The incident unfolded on Thursday evening during a joint patrol with anti-cult operatives, when the officers reportedly stopped the victim on the grounds that he was suspected of carrying illegal substances. He was subsequently shot in the right leg. After the shooting, the officers allegedly abandoned the scene, fleeing before a crowd of angry youths could confront them.
Footage circulating from the scene showed bystanders rushing to aid the injured man in the absence of the officers who shot him.
The incident has drawn swift condemnation from the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements — a civil liberties group widely known by its motto, “No Justice, No Peace.” The organisation’s National Coordinator, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, stressed that law enforcement exists to shield citizens, not endanger them, saying the primary duty of the police is to protect lives and property — not to harass or brutalise vulnerable members of society.
The group characterised the shooting as unprofessional conduct and called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, to launch a full investigation and hold the responsible officers accountable.
The shooting adds to a growing wave of public anger in the state over police-related violence, following the recent killing of Oghenemine Ogidi, who was shot dead by an officer in Effurun, Delta State.
