The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his last attempt at Nigeria’s top job, regardless of the outcome.
The former Vice President made the declaration during a Facebook live session on Thursday, acknowledging his previous attempts at the presidency while insisting that next year’s poll marks the end of the road for him.
He also renewed his allegation that President Bola Tinubu’s academic certificates are fake, maintaining that it is unacceptable for the President of Nigeria to be surrounded by questions over his academic qualifications.
Atiku said: “Whether I win or lose, 2027 will be my last time contesting for the presidency.
“I was the one who raised the issue surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s academic certificates, and I stand by my position that there was forgery.
“It is unacceptable for the President of Nigeria to have such questions surrounding his academic credentials.”
Atiku Promises To Restore Fuel Subsidy
In a related development, Atiku has pledged to reinstate the fuel subsidy if elected President in 2027.
He made the promise while fielding questions in an interview currently circulating on social media, criticising the economic fallout of the subsidy removal under the Tinubu administration and arguing that Nigerians are yet to feel any real benefits from the policy.
Tinubu had announced the end of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration speech in May 2023, a move that triggered a sharp rise in fuel prices and a corresponding increase in transportation costs, food prices, and the general cost of living.
Although the Federal Government has defended the policy, insisting it freed up more resources for the three tiers of government and funded infrastructure and other key programmes, Atiku questioned how the savings have actually been deployed.
He explained that he did not initially oppose the removal of the subsidy but changed his stance after weighing its consequences on ordinary Nigerians.
