Nigeria’s aviation regulator has approved the Gusau International Airport in Zamfara State for use during the 2026 Hajj season, following a comprehensive inspection of the facility.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) conducted a technical assessment of the airport, with a delegation led by Director Ahmad Abba on behalf of the General Manager of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Bayode B.S.
Inspectors evaluated key infrastructure including the runway, terminal building and control tower, and expressed satisfaction with the quality of work carried out at the site. Officials noted that construction standards were in line with aviation safety requirements.
Zamfara State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Lawal Barau Bungudu, accompanied the NCAA team on a tour of the airport, joined by other senior government officials.
The NCAA described the facility’s level of readiness as a reflection of the state government’s commitment to delivering a safe, modern and fully functional airport for residents and travellers alike.
The inspection is understood to be among the final technical steps before the airport is formally commissioned. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to improve air connectivity across Zamfara State and unlock broader economic benefits in sectors such as trade, logistics and tourism.
For intending pilgrims, the airport’s clearance for Hajj operations is particularly significant, as it is expected to ease the burden of long-distance travel to departure points in other states.
The Zamfara State Government welcomed the NCAA’s commendation, describing the regulator’s endorsement as confirmation that the project was delivered with safety and international aviation standards at its core.
