The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has urged sustained investment in indigenous space technology, research and innovation, saying it is vital to national security and the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Oluyede spoke in Abuja at the maiden Defence Space Administration (DSA) Day, held under the theme “Space Power and National Security.”
In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS praised the DSA’s progress so far. He cited the launch of DelSat-1, the setting up of geospatial intelligence infrastructure, the deployment of a Modular Earth Observation Outpost at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI, and the start of academic activities at the Defence Space School in Orogun.
He directed the administration to step up indigenous research and development, make space-based products more reliable and secure, and fold them more deeply into joint and inter-agency military operations to tackle emerging security threats.
The CDS also stressed the need for closer collaboration among the Armed Forces, academia, industry and relevant national agencies to speed up local innovation and widen Nigeria’s capacity to use space technology for defence and national development.
In his welcome address, the Chief of Defence Space Administration, Major General Philip Ilodibia, called for stronger synergy among the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force to improve joint operational effectiveness.
He also urged continued collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) and other stakeholders to advance Nigeria’s space capabilities in support of national security and development.
