The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the government, the holiday declaration underscores its respect for the religious beliefs and spiritual values of millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world observing the sacred festival.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful both in Nigeria and abroad, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a significant Islamic celebration that promotes sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion toward others.
He urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and reflection, while seeking divine intervention for lasting peace, security, and economic prosperity in the country.
The statement added that the Federal Government wishes Muslims a peaceful, joyful, and spiritually rewarding celebration in the spirit of unity and brotherhood.
Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, said it has strengthened security arrangements ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the region.
In a statement by the task force’s spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the command disclosed that the measures are aimed at guaranteeing the safety of residents during the festive season.
The command also revealed that intelligence reports suggested that remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists may attempt isolated attacks during the celebration, prompting heightened security surveillance across the North-East.
