The Federal Government has appointed Dr Olugbenga A. Awe, a United States-based physician and academic, as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State.
His appointment was communicated in a letter dated July 30, 2026, signed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and took effect from July 29, 2026.
Awe succeeds Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, who recently left the position after her appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea.
A graduate of the University of Lagos, Awe went on to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as Internal Medicine. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in the United States, where he has built a significant part of his academic and medical career. His professional experience also spans enterprise, education management and public service.
As Pro-Chancellor, Awe will work with other members of FUTA’s governing council on matters concerning the institution’s administration, development and overall direction.
The Federal Government said it expects to draw on his experience in the United States and his knowledge of higher education as he takes up leadership of the university’s governing council.
