The Federal Government has greenlit a new salary structure for staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), alongside revised conditions of service for its employees.
The approval was communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. A letter dated April 29, 2026, signed by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana on behalf of the SGF, confirmed that the new pay arrangement will take effect on June 1, 2026.
The move follows an earlier request submitted by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on March 23, 2026. “I am directed to convey that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has approved the recommended consolidated salary structure for NiMet with an effective date of June 1, 2026,” the letter read.
NiMet employees are expected to transition into the updated pay structure once implementation kicks off next month.
Meanwhile, Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero has cautioned that higher wages alone will not improve workers’ lives without a stable currency and a stronger economy. Speaking to NAN in Abuja, Ajaero stressed that workers are far more concerned about the purchasing power of the naira than mere salary increments, arguing that even a ₦1 million monthly wage would lose its significance in the absence of broader economic stability.
