The Federal Government has released funds to clear a five-month backlog of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance owed to lecturers in federal universities, directing university authorities to begin immediate payment to all eligible academic staff.
The directive was issued by Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa in a letter dated June 4, 2026, addressed to vice-chancellors of federal universities. It forms part of the ongoing implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Vice-chancellors were instructed to ensure prompt disbursement of the funds to affected staff. Universities that had bridged the allowance gap using internally generated revenue or other internal sources from January 2026 are to be reimbursed once federal allocations are received, with such refunds properly recorded in the appropriate accounts and budget categories.
University managements were also directed to adhere strictly to financial regulations and maintain clear records of all payments and reimbursements tied to the allowance.
The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance is designed to support lecturers’ academic activities, covering research, teaching materials, internet access, publications, and other resources required for university duties.
