Ghana has sent back 120 Nigerians who were arrested during a cybercrime crackdown, after authorities alleged that the group had been trafficked into the country and forced into online criminal activities.
Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, announced this on Tuesday in a post on 𝕏.
He said the Nigerians were picked up during Operation Cyberhunt, an operation led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with intelligence and security agencies from Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
According to George, the Nigerians were allegedly trafficked to Ghana and made to work in cybercrime facilities.
He thanked the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for facilitating their return home.
“My sincere gratitude goes to the #ghana_airforce and the #modghana for facilitating the repatriation of 120 Nigerian nationals who were arrested during #OperationCyberhunt,” he wrote.
The operation also led to the seizure of 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet connectivity devices, valuable jewellery and 10 Nigerian passports.
Security operatives further recovered four vehicles, one of which was reportedly stolen from Canada.
George disclosed that eight other suspects were being processed for prosecution as investigations continued.
He added that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration would not allow Ghana to become a safe haven for cybercriminals, and that the country remained committed to working with other nations to tackle cross-border crime.
