Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to establish a state-owned commercial airline aimed at creating employment opportunities for indigenous pilots.
The governor disclosed this during the 40th Kano State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano.
Yusuf said the proposed airline would absorb Kano indigenes who had completed professional pilot training but were yet to secure employment in the aviation industry.
A statement issued Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the airline is expected to commence operations within the next one year.
The governor received several awards during the meeting, including one from the Kano State Pilot Association, in recognition of his support for members who underwent aviation training.
Speaking on the project, Yusuf said, “By the grace of God, the proposed Kano Airline is expected to commence operations within the next one year.”
He said the airline would serve as a platform for engaging trained Kano indigenes still searching for suitable employment in aviation, describing it as part of his administration’s broader push to empower youths and expand job opportunities in the state.
Yusuf also commended the performance of Kano-sponsored pilots trained in Jordan under a programme launched by a previous administration, calling their achievements encouraging. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the aviation sector and pledged continued assistance to help the pilots put their skills to use.
Earlier, Chairman of the Kano State Pilot Association, Naziru Ibrahim, commended the governor for helping members of the association revalidate their flying licences, describing the intervention as a major boost to their careers.
Ibrahim, however, appealed to the governor to help members secure their final certifications, noting that this would enable them to operate commercial flights within Nigeria and pursue opportunities with international airlines.
The association expressed optimism that the proposed Kano-owned airline would create more opportunities for trained pilots from the state and strengthen the local aviation sector.
