Armed men have killed a serving officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack took place at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew recently imposed in parts of the area following repeated attacks.
A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, said the victim, a Deputy Superintendent of the corps, was shot near his residence while riding his motorcycle.
According to him, the gunmen had earlier kidnapped a businessman who deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser. The attackers opened fire on the officer after the headlight of his motorcycle exposed them as they fled with their captive.
Tabitha said the incident has heightened fears over security in Pushit and neighbouring communities, despite measures put in place to curb the attacks.
He called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to urgently beef up security in Pushit District and secure the safe release of the abducted businessman.
He added that residents are worried by repeated attacks in communities within the district, including Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya.
Tabitha also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
Efforts to reach security operatives for confirmation were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
