The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally presented Certificates of Return to winners of the bye-elections conducted on June 20, 2026, covering constituencies in Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano states.
The certificates were issued on behalf of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan by Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State. In her address, she congratulated the winners and charged them to prioritise the welfare of their constituents, stressing that faithful representation remains the highest obligation of any elected official.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu also disclosed that certificates would similarly be presented to winners in Kebbi State, for the Zuru State Constituency election, and in Ekiti State, for the governorship election. National Commissioners assigned to the respective constituencies thereafter formally presented the certificates to each candidate, officially recognising them as duly returned winners.
In a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered accelerated hearing in a lawsuit filed by the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party against INEC over the party’s protracted leadership crisis.
Justice Salim Ibrahim issued the directive after counsel to the plaintiffs, Chief Gordy Uche (SAN), told the court the matter was time-sensitive, citing INEC’s revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, which sets July as a critical deadline.
The plaintiffs — comprising members of the Wabara-led BoT and the PDP — are seeking a court order compelling INEC to recognise the Kabir Turaki-led interim National Working Committee and reflect this on its official website. They are also asking the court to direct INEC to update its records and publish the names of interim NWC members, as forwarded to the commission via letters dated May 4
