British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially announced his resignation, bringing an end to his leadership less than two years after taking office.
Starmer made the announcement on Monday, June 22, during an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, stating that his decision was driven by what he believes is in the best interest of the United Kingdom.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.
The outgoing prime minister disclosed that the Labour Party would begin the process of selecting a new leader in July. He added that he would remain in office until a successor is chosen, with the transition expected to be completed by September.
Reports indicate that Starmer spent the weekend at Chequers, the official country residence of British prime ministers, where he held consultations with close allies and family members before reaching his final decision.
His resignation comes amid growing political pressure and declining public support, with recent opinion polls showing increasing voter dissatisfaction with his administration.
Tensions within the Labour Party intensified following a decisive electoral victory by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham in the Makerfield contest. Burnham’s strong performance, which saw him secure 55 percent of the vote, fueled speculation about a possible leadership challenge and strengthened calls for a change at the top of the party.
Several Labour lawmakers reportedly view Burnham as a stronger candidate to take on Reform UK and its leader, Nigel Farage, in the next general election.
Although Starmer had previously insisted he would remain in office and resist any leadership challenge, party insiders suggested that his political standing weakened significantly after the Makerfield result.
Starmer became prime minister in July 2024 but has faced persistent criticism during his tenure over policy reversals, political controversies, ministerial resignations, and a series of governance challenges.
His departure now sets the stage for a leadership contest that could shape the future direction of both the Labour Party and the United Kingdom’s political landscape.
