The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, commonly known as the Lagos State Taskforce, has denied a social media claim that its officers stopped a truck driver and demanded a permit for the “TRD” inscription on his vehicle.
In a statement, the agency described the allegation as false and misleading, stressing that demanding permits for vehicle inscriptions is not part of its operational mandate. It said its officers therefore have no basis for stopping a driver over such a matter.
The Taskforce also noted that it has stopped arresting and enforcing traffic offences, following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, on the discontinuation of traffic-related enforcement by its personnel. Its operatives, it said, are not authorised to stop vehicles for traffic offences or carry out traffic enforcement operations.
The agency cautioned the public against attributing the actions of uniformed personnel to the Taskforce without verification. It explained that wearing camouflage or a similar uniform does not automatically make someone a Taskforce operative, since several security and law-enforcement agencies operate in Lagos State, each with its own mandate and uniform.
Under its Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, the Taskforce said it remains committed to lawful, disciplined and professional enforcement, adding that its operatives have repeatedly been directed to act within the limits of their duties and respect citizens’ rights.
It urged the public and social media users to verify facts and correctly identify the agency or personnel involved before posting allegations that could mislead people or damage the reputation of a government institution.
The Taskforce restated that it did not demand any permit from the driver over the “TRD” inscription and has no mandate to do so. It encouraged members of the public to report any genuine incident involving suspected Taskforce personnel through the appropriate channels for investigation, rather than relying on unverified social media claims.
