The Lagos State Government has announced an ambitious plan to generate up to 4,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity through the development of four major power hubs under its Clean Lagos Electricity Market initiative.
The project aims to reduce dependence on the national grid and tackle the persistent power shortages in Lagos, Africa’s commercial capital.
According to the plan, each hub will host gas-fired power plants with a minimum capacity of 500MW, collectively contributing to the state’s long-term energy target upon completion.
Currently, Lagos faces an estimated electricity demand of about 6,000MW, while supply from the national grid falls short at under 2,000MW, creating a significant energy gap.
To enhance distribution efficiency, the proposed hubs will be located near infrastructure operated by major power distribution companies such as Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electric.
Key sites identified for the project include Egbin, Ikorodu, Badagry, Agbara, and Ogudu—locations selected for their proximity to existing substations to support effective power transmission.
The Clean Lagos Electricity Market initiative is expected to strengthen industrial development, improve electricity reliability, and drive economic growth across the state.
