The Lagos State University (LASU) has expressed grief over the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who passed away after sustaining serious injuries during a robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
The university announced the tragic development in a statement issued by the Acting Coordinator of its Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe.
Boluwatife, a student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, was reportedly attacked alongside some friends by suspected armed robbers on May 29, 2026, outside the university campus. He suffered severe injuries during the incident and was immediately taken for medical treatment.
LASU management described the student’s death as a painful loss to the institution and the wider university community. According to the statement, emergency support measures were activated as soon as the school became aware of the attack.
“The university community received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent robbery attack in the Iba area,” the statement noted.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and loved ones, assuring them of the university’s support during the difficult period.
The institution revealed that the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, coordinated the university’s response after the attack, providing regular updates to management and maintaining contact with the medical team overseeing the student’s treatment.
Despite efforts by doctors and other healthcare professionals to save his life, Boluwatife died on June 2, 2026.
Following his death, LASU said its representatives met with members of the bereaved family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served.
The university also disclosed that it is collaborating with security agencies investigating the incident and expressed confidence that those responsible for the attack would be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
“We are working closely with relevant security agencies in the ongoing investigation and remain confident that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” the statement said.
LASU described the deceased as a valued member of the university community and urged staff, students and stakeholders to support his family in their time of grief. The institution also prayed for the repose of his soul and called for calm as investigations continue.
The incident has renewed concerns over security in communities surrounding higher institutions in Lagos, with many stakeholders calling for stronger measures to protect students and residents from criminal activities.
