Popular Nigerian content creator and comedian Layi Wasabi has done a full U-turn on his once-rigid views about romance, crediting the Lagos dating scene for the change of heart.
The skit maker, widely known for his viral lawyer character, previously held an unusually firm stance on relationships — one that left no room for casual dating. In an earlier interview, he made clear that he had no interest in the typical boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic, insisting instead on entering every relationship with marriage already in mind.
“I don’t believe in the concept of a girlfriend. I believe in partnership. I start with courtship. I have to see the wife in the person from the beginning,” he had said.
Fast forward to now, and Wasabi is singing a very different tune. Reacting to that old clip on X, the comedian admitted that taking that mindset into Lagos’s dating world was, to put it mildly, a humbling experience.
“Na this mentality I use enter Lagos dating pool. Dem wan kill me. Abeg, I no dey try see wife in the beginning again o. Thanks,” he wrote, with characteristic humour.
The post struck a chord with many followers who related to the gap between relationship ideals and the often unpredictable reality of dating in a city like Lagos. While Wasabi did not go into specifics, his tone suggested the experience was enough to permanently retire his old rulebook.
