Argentine President Javier Milei launched a scathing attack on the United Nations during an address to the world body on Wednesday, branding it a “useless organisation” overrun by “arrogant parasites.”
Milei, widely regarded as one of the closest Latin American allies of US President Donald Trump, has become a familiar critic of the UN, repeatedly using its platform to denounce what he describes as failures in global governance and a “woke” agenda he opposes.
In his latest broadside, the Argentine leader accused the UN of abandoning its core mandate to safeguard collective security and human rights, arguing that its inaction had allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to spread unchecked.
“[The UN] has become a useless organisation, serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats,” Milei said.
He also took aim at the organisation over Argentina’s long-standing claim to the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory that Argentina calls Las Malvinas. Buenos Aires has repeatedly accused London of violating a UN resolution that calls on both nations to refrain from unilateral action over the disputed islands, the site of a 1982 war between the two countries.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.
His remarks came the same day Argentina and the United States unveiled a joint infrastructure initiative — the Andes-Atlantic Corridor — aimed at boosting investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals, and energy across the South American country. The project, according to a joint statement, will also work to connect Argentina to “vital economic sectors, major Atlantic ports and Western markets,” and includes plans tied to Vaca Muerta, one of the region’s largest hydrocarbon deposits.
The initiative underscores the deepening ties between Milei and Trump, whose alliance has grown increasingly prominent on the international stage.
