The Nigerian Navy has uncovered and dismantled another illegal crude oil storage facility in the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, disclosed this in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja, noting that the raid was executed by troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny under Operation Delta Sentinel.
Folorunsho said the operatives moved on credible intelligence to the Bethel Community axis, where they found a network of hidden dugout pits used for storing suspected stolen crude.
Six pits were discovered in total. Three of them held roughly 20,500 litres of suspected stolen crude, while the other three had been dug and prepared for future storage, he said.
He described the setup as pointing to an organised storage operation feeding illegal refining and other forms of economic sabotage.
“The illegal storage facility and the recovered products were handled in accordance with extant anti-crude oil theft procedures, preventing criminals from establishing another strategic logistics hub for their illicit activities,” he said.
The naval spokesman said the operation reflects the service’s firm stance against oil thieves and economic saboteurs, adding that the Navy’s strategy now targets the infrastructure behind crude theft rather than just intercepting stolen products in transit.
“By dismantling storage facilities and disrupting supply networks, the service aims to weaken the operational capacity of criminal syndicates and safeguard Nigeria’s vital oil and gas resources,” he said.
He cautioned anyone contemplating involvement in oil theft to steer clear, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
Folorunsho reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to intelligence-led operations under Operation Delta Sentinel to combat crude oil theft, protect Nigeria’s maritime environment, and safeguard the nation’s economic security.
