The South-West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, Dr Adefolaseye Adebayo, has claimed that approximately 10 million Nigerians signed up with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in the single day following former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s switch to the party.
Adebayo made the assertion during a Monday appearance on Arise TV, where she pushed back against suggestions that Obi’s political prospects had dimmed after he and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso abandoned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC on Sunday.
“Mr Peter Obi has a lot of followership across Nigeria,” she said. “24 hours after Peter Obi left ADC, 10 million Nigerians registered with NDC and that says a lot.”
Adebayo argued that Obi’s influence transcends any single party platform, insisting his appeal is rooted in his personality, governance record, and perceived competence rather than a party structure. She maintained that his support base spans all six geopolitical zones, making it premature to write off his 2027 presidential ambitions.
The joint defection of Obi and Kwankwaso has sparked widespread debate in political circles, with critics contending the move could fragment their support base ahead of the next general elections. Supporters, however, believe their alliance under the NDC banner could forge a formidable opposition coalition, particularly among voters disillusioned with the existing political establishment.
Adebayo reiterated that loyal followers of both politicians would track them to whatever platform they chose, and that the reported surge in NDC membership signalled enduring public interest in the Obi-Kwankwaso political project.
