The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has firmly rejected as false the reports spreading across social media claiming that the federal government suspended upkeep allowance payments to student loan beneficiaries.
In a statement released Thursday, NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, described the reports as entirely fabricated and designed to stir panic and distrust among students and the wider public.
Oluwatuyi stressed that neither NELFUND nor the federal government had issued any directive suspending upkeep payments, adding that the viral content included a fake statement wrongly attributed to the agency, alongside an AI-generated newspaper front page falsely presented as a Nigerian Tribune publication.
The fund warned that the doctored newspaper cover circulating online was artificially produced and bears no connection to any legitimate or authorised government communication.
NELFUND urged students, parents, and stakeholders to ignore the misleading publications and turn only to the agency’s official channels and trusted media outlets for accurate information. It also called on the public to stop sharing unverified content that could fuel widespread anxiety.
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to broadening access to higher education and sustaining its student financing initiatives despite the disinformation campaign.
