Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has restated the country’s commitment to global efforts aimed at ending nuclear-weapon testing.
Speaking at the 108th Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly’s 80th Session in New York, Ibrahim made clear that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and has never run a nuclear weapons programme.
As Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, he called for a review of Article 2(7) of the UN Charter, arguing that the principle of non-interference in states’ internal affairs should not shield countries that test nuclear weapons or hold weapons of mass destruction from international action.
Ibrahim noted that several institutions and regulatory bodies are already tasked with monitoring and addressing issues tied to weapons of mass destruction, naming the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission as the country’s lead agency for nuclear oversight and regulation.
He added that Nigeria works with a range of countries — including Russia, China, France, South Korea, and the United States — as part of its broader commitment to international cooperation on nuclear matters.
According to Ibrahim, President Bola Tinubu personally directed him to use the platform to reaffirm Nigeria’s readiness to deepen partnerships geared toward eliminating nuclear-weapon testing worldwide.
