Nigerian-American poet, Daniel Umemezie, has been named the 2026-2027 United States National Youth Poet Laureate, a development that has earned him recognition from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
With this honour, Umemezie becomes the 10th young poet to hold the prestigious title and only the second Nigerian-American to achieve the feat, following in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who made history in 2023 as the first Nigerian-American to clinch the award.
Umemezie, described as a gifted writer, uses poetry to explore themes bordering on heritage, identity, and the complexities of the Nigerian-American experience.
His emergence marks another milestone for Nigerian-American representation in the US literary community, coming three years after Agbaroji’s historic selection.
The U.S. Mission Nigeria celebrated Umemezie’s achievement across its social media platforms, describing him as a gifted Nigerian-American voice whose poetry bridges heritage, identity, and the Nigerian-American experience.
“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026–2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate — the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so, following 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji,” the mission said.
The Mission also praised Umemezie’s ability to use poetry to capture the richness and complexity of life while stressing the importance of young people in creative expression. It noted that his achievement demonstrates how talented young people can deploy creativity to thrive, lead, and inspire others.
Umemezie’s selection further underscores the growing contribution of Nigerian-American voices to the US literary and cultural landscape.
