The Nigerian Army says its official X (formerly Twitter) account came under attack on Saturday, after unauthorised posts promoting memecoins surfaced on the handle.
The Army said it has since activated emergency security measures to regain full control of the account, describing the development as a cybersecurity breach.
The suspicious posts reportedly went up around 3:50 pm on Saturday, sparking concern among users who follow the account.
In a statement issued the same day, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the military detected the unauthorised access attempt and moved swiftly to secure the platform.
“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” Anele said in the statement, which was posted on the Army’s Facebook page.
She added that both technical and protective measures had been deployed to contain the breach and stop further compromise, noting that the steps were aimed at securing the account, preventing additional unauthorised access, and protecting the credibility of information shared through the platform.
The Army has cautioned Nigerians and the media against trusting any content posted on the account until the situation is fully resolved, while assuring the public that it is working to restore complete administrative control.
“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” Anele said.
This is the second such breach in recent weeks. On August 16, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) disclosed that its own official X account had similarly been hacked.
