The Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade in Katsina State has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Corporal Ude Jude, dismissing online reports suggesting internal sabotage or negligence within the military.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, Capt. Abayomi Adisa, the army described the circulating claims as false and misleading.
Adisa explained that the deceased was a corporal who joined the Nigerian Army in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake, contrary to reports that wrongly referred to him as a lieutenant.
He also clarified that the incident that led to the soldier’s injuries did not happen inside the barracks, but outside the Forward Operating Base in Funtua, where he was deployed.
According to him, the incident occurred on February 16 at about 8:30 p.m. when the soldier left his duty post to buy personal items and was involved in a confrontation with a civilian following a personal disagreement, which escalated into a violent attack.
The soldier reportedly sustained stab wounds and other injuries during the encounter. He was given first aid at the scene and later evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre for treatment, where medical personnel managed his condition.
Although he received weeks of medical care and monitoring, Adisa said the soldier later collapsed outside his residence on March 24, 2026, shortly after receiving treatment. He was rushed back to the medical facility but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The brigade added that it supported the deceased soldier’s family throughout the process, including burial arrangements. The Garrison Commander reportedly provided a coffin and mortuary assistance, while additional support also came from the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.
His personal military items were handed over to his next of kin in line with standard procedure, and security support was also provided during the burial.
The army said the delay in issuing an official statement was due to the need to verify facts and consult relevant military authorities. It also confirmed that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
While expressing condolences to the family, the brigade reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the welfare of its personnel, urging the public to rely only on verified official information.
