The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action against officers involved in the filmed killing of a restrained man in Delta State, ordering their dismissal and criminal prosecution.
Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Okon, a deputy commissioner of police, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, saying the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) had concluded its investigation into the incident.
The case drew widespread public outrage after video footage circulated online showing officer Nuhu Usman, an assistant superintendent of police, and others fatally shooting a handcuffed man later identified as Mene Ogidi, 28, in broad daylight. The officers were subsequently arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
Committee Findings
The FDC determined that Usman had acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. The committee described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a direct betrayal of the oath sworn to protect lives and uphold the law.
Following the committee’s recommendations, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu approved the immediate dismissal of Usman and all other officers found culpable. The decision has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification. Once administrative procedures are completed, the officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for criminal prosecution.
Zero Tolerance
IGP Disu used the occasion to restate the Force’s position on officer misconduct, stressing that no uniform grants the right to take a life outside the law. He warned that any officer who violates that principle will face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
Disu also extended condolences to the family of Ogidi, pledging that the case would be pursued to its “logical conclusion.” He assured the public that the Force remains committed to accountability, professionalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity.
