Nigerian passport holders will soon have visa-free access to two more African countries, as Chad and the Republic of the Congo prepare to scrap entry visa requirements for African nationals from January 1, 2027.
Both governments have announced plans to open their borders to citizens of all African countries without prior visa applications, part of a continent-wide push for freer movement of people and stronger regional integration.
Chad
Chad will abolish visa requirements for African nationals starting January 1, 2027. President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno announced the policy in July 2026, describing it as a step toward advancing African integration and the free movement of people and goods across the continent.
Once the policy takes effect, Nigerians and other African travellers will be able to enter Chad without applying for an entry visa in advance.
Republic of the Congo
The Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, will implement a similar policy from the same date. President Denis Sassou Nguesso made the announcement during the 2026 African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings held in Brazzaville.
He said nationals of all African countries would be able to enter the Republic of the Congo visa-free from January 1, 2027, subject to minimal administrative and security checks.
The move is designed to deepen continental integration and support free movement across Africa, in line with goals under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
