The governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have unanimously endorsed the establishment of State Police as part of efforts to strengthen security and deepen the country’s federal structure.
The position was made public through a communiqué issued by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) following its meeting in Abuja, which stretched from Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday.
The communiqué was signed by the Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
According to the governors, the proposed State Police framework is consistent with constitutional principles, promotes true federalism, and protects the rights and interests of citizens across the country.
The endorsement marks a significant step in the ongoing national conversation on decentralizing policing and improving internal security at the state level.
