The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened to boycott the 2027 general elections in the South-East and other regions unless the Federal Government ensures the pending appeal of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is heard.
In a statement, the group’s Head of the Fourth Administrator Directorate of State (DOS), Chris Nwaogu, disclosed the plan but cautioned that the boycott must not be used as cover for violence, disruption of political rallies, or attacks on people and property.
IPOB described the threatened boycott as “not a threat, but a promise,” maintaining that the responsibility for averting it lies with the authorities.
“Anybody who wants it called off should stop talking to IPOB and talk to the APC government,” the group said, calling on authorities to ensure Kanu’s appeal is listed and heard without further delay.
The group said it would not reveal its strategy for the boycott until closer to the elections, warning that early disclosure could give politicians and other interests room to hijack the action and incite violence.
IPOB further alleged that political thugs had been deployed to disrupt opposition rallies and ward meetings in Enugu State, citing incidents in Nkanu West where it claimed people were shot and property destroyed. It warned that such use of criminal elements to intimidate political opponents “will be put to an end in the coming days.”
The group also renewed criticism of how Kanu’s case has been handled, accusing the Federal Government and the judiciary of stalling his appeal. It challenged aspects of the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho, arguing that provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and Section 36 of the Constitution raise questions that should be resolved on appeal.
