The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that presidential candidate Peter Obi signed a formal written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected in 2027.
Kwankwaso disclosed this on Channels Television on Tuesday, stressing that the arrangement went beyond personal trust and was backed by signed documents.
He said both he and Obi signed separate agreements — one on behalf of the party, and another between themselves personally.
“We are all gentlemen. Even though we have accepted to put it even on paper. We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” Kwankwaso said.
The disclosure comes amid mounting speculation over a possible one-term arrangement between the two opposition figures, seen as part of a broader strategy to mount a stronger challenge against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Kwankwaso also praised their supporters, describing them as politically committed citizens focused on more than material incentives.
“Our supporters are not just merely people who are looking for money or who are looking for textile or food items on the day of election. These are people who are determined not only to vote but to make sure that the votes are being protected,” he said.
Asked about his own ambitions for 2031, Kwankwaso declined to commit, insisting the immediate focus remains winning 2027.
He noted that the opposition coalition has short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for reshaping the country’s political direction.
“We are praying that all of us should see 2027 and, of course, 2031. We will look at the circumstances and see what can be done,” he said.
The one-term agreement has become a major talking point within opposition ranks ahead of 2027. Supporters argue it could foster political balance and unite opposition forces, while critics continue to question its legality, enforceability, and long-term political implications.
