Nigerian author and columnist, Okey Ndibe, has regained his freedom after being detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Ndibe confirmed his release in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, expressing appreciation to friends, associates, and supporters who showed concern following reports of his detention.
According to the writer, he was held for more than three hours by DSS officials at the airport before being released. Despite the experience, he commended the officers who handled the matter, describing them as professional and respectful throughout the period of his detention.
“I am deeply grateful for the outpouring of concern from friends, acquaintances, and many others following my detention earlier today by the DSS at Murtala Muhammed International Airport,” Ndibe wrote.
He added that the two DSS operatives who interacted with him conducted themselves courteously during the more than three-hour detention and confirmed that he had been released.
The renowned author further revealed that he received numerous calls and messages from concerned individuals across different parts of the world after news of the incident emerged.
While noting that he could not respond to everyone immediately, Ndibe assured his supporters that he was in good health and high spirits and would return more calls in the coming days.
“In the coming days, I will make time to return more calls. For now, I want everyone to know that I am fine and in excellent spirits. I sincerely appreciate your messages, support, and gestures of friendship,” he said.
The circumstances surrounding his detention have not yet been officially disclosed by the DSS.
