Okin Biscuits, the Ijagbo-based snack brand many Nigerians grew up on, has returned to production with an updated look, sparking a wave of nostalgia online.
News of the comeback trended on social platforms, with many older Nigerians recalling their childhood memories of the brand — particularly its shortcake variant, remembered for its thick, four-cornered shape that some fondly described as unmistakably filling. Reactions were mixed on whether the new round-shaped biscuits could recreate the same taste and texture loyal customers remember.
Some commenters raised concerns about whether the relaunch can survive current economic realities, pointing to cheaper imported alternatives from countries like China as a major threat to local manufacturers. Others noted that several legacy biscuit brands have adapted by localizing production — citing McVitie’s, now manufactured in Nigeria by Pladis, as an example of a foreign brand successfully building local manufacturing capacity.
There was also debate over whether younger Nigerians, particularly Gen Z, would embrace the brand the way earlier generations did. While some argued the youth are unfamiliar with the product or see it as outdated, others pushed back, noting that the biscuit market remains lucrative due to steady demand from schoolchildren and snack lovers regardless of generation.
Okin Biscuits reportedly halted production years ago, and its return marks an attempt to reclaim shelf space in a market now dominated by both local and imported competitors.
