The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, Bola Oyebamiji, says he respects the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to declare Governor Ademola Adeleke winner of the poll.
Adeleke’s victory secures his second and final term, completing eight years in office.
In a statement on X on Tuesday addressed to APC members, leaders and supporters in the state, Oyebamiji said the party had hoped for a different outcome but would not contest the electoral umpire’s position, even as it proceeds with an internal review of the result.
“Although we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire, and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review of the outcome of the election,” he said.
He thanked voters, party members and volunteers who backed his campaign, describing their support as a vote of confidence in the alternative vision he presented to Osun residents.
Oyebamiji said the end of the campaign did not mean an end to the causes behind it. “The campaign has come to an end, and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive. We would continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun,” he said.
He urged party faithful to stay engaged and continue serving their communities’ interests.
However, the APC candidate raised the alarm over what he described as a fresh wave of attacks on APC members since the election, calling on the Osun State Government and security agencies to intervene.
“At the same time, I wish to alert the State Government and security agents to the growing trend of hostility and violence against our members and supporters,” he said, adding that the pattern of attacks recorded before the poll had “taken another dimension” in the 24 hours after voting.
He specifically appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act without delay, while urging his supporters to remain calm and peaceful during the post-election period.
Oyebamiji closed by thanking his party members and supporters for their commitment throughout the campaign.
