Taiwo Oyedele has been sworn in as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, taking over from Wale Edun in a formal handover ceremony that took place Thursday evening.
The transition, confirmed by the ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Efe Ovuakporie, was completed within the deadline set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Stepping into the role, Oyedele wasted no time laying out his priorities. He pledged to build on existing economic reforms while keeping a sharp eye on results — promising fiscal discipline, transparency, and stronger performance across key sectors of the economy. He also signalled an open-door approach with ministry staff, stressing collaboration as central to improving service delivery.
Oyedele offered warm words for his predecessor, crediting Edun with meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s reform agenda, and extended his gratitude to President Tinubu for the appointment.
The ministry’s leadership welcomed him with matching enthusiasm. Permanent Secretary Raymond Omachi and his counterpart for Special Duties, Mohammed Danjuma, both pledged full support from the workforce.
Edun’s time in office was defined by efforts to boost government revenue and sharpen economic coordination — but it was not without turbulence. Budget implementation struggled under tight funding conditions, leaving several ministries, departments, and agencies stretched. Outstanding obligations to pensioners and contractors also remained unresolved — challenges that now land squarely on Oyedele’s desk.
