The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended President Bola Tinubu over the signing of a 15-year gas supply agreement for the UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) project.
The Wet Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement, signed during the NOG Energy Week in Abuja, was executed by the NNPC/Seplat Energy Joint Venture and UTM FLNG Limited. It guarantees 200 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d) to the facility and clears the biggest hurdle to the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID).
PANDEF said the deal marks a step toward boosting local participation, creating jobs, and industrializing the Niger Delta. The forum credited Tinubu’s administration with creating an enabling environment for multi-billion-dollar investments in regional infrastructure, adding that empowering indigenous operators remains key to long-term peace and economic stability in the oil-rich region.
UTM FLNG’s Group Managing Director, Julius Rone, said the milestone would not have been possible without Tinubu’s push on the “Decade of Gas” initiative. He said the project shows what indigenous companies can achieve with deliberate government backing.
The facility, Nigeria’s first indigenous floating LNG plant, is expected to cut gas flaring, lower local energy costs, and improve access to cooking gas (LPG) for millions of households.
NNPC officials said the agreement aligns with the federal government’s broader economic reforms. They projected the facility will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, cut carbon emissions, and generate foreign exchange through energy exports.
With gas supply secured, developers are now accelerating plans to bring the facility online.
