The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially cleared former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as the sole aspirant for its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday evening, accompanied by Anambra Central Senator Victor Umeh, where he underwent screening before a committee chaired by former Education Minister Sam Egwu.
Egwu confirmed that Obi satisfied all constitutional and Electoral Act requirements and provided adequate responses to the panel’s questions, earning him an unreserved clearance to contest the party’s upcoming presidential primary.
“He is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election on a date to be announced by the party,” Egwu declared, before handing Obi an official clearance letter alongside nomination form numbered 001.
Obi had collected the NDC’s presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on Sunday, May 17 — the original deadline set for presidential aspirants.
While the party has since extended the form collection window for other candidate categories to May 24, it confirmed that the presidential form collection process has formally closed, making Obi the only aspirant screened for that slot. The return of completed nomination forms by cleared aspirants opens Wednesday, May 20, and closes May 26.
