NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has revisited his decision to scrap the Office of the First Lady during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, explaining that he did not see the justification for funding a position that had no electoral backing.
Speaking in an interview with Advocacy for Good Governance, Obi said he communicated this directly to his wife at the time, telling her that since she was not elected by the people, she should not carry on as though she held an official government office.
He said he asked her to remain at home while he concentrated on the responsibilities voters had actually elected him to handle.
According to Obi, the move reflected his broader philosophy on public spending — that government resources should be channelled into areas with direct impact on citizens, especially education and healthcare.
“I shut down (the) office of the first lady; I said it should not exist. Because nobody voted for you, you’re just my wife, and I love you. So you stay at home with me,” he said.
