The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Shobande Taofeek, for allegedly vandalising and stealing railway infrastructure in the Arigbajo area of the state.
Operatives also recovered 16 railway iron rods and two gas cylinders believed to have been stolen.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit made the arrest after receiving intelligence on the alleged vandalism and theft of railway materials in the area.
According to him, the operatives stepped up surveillance and patrols in the affected area on Friday, October 23, which led to the suspect’s arrest.
Babaseyi said the suspect then led the team to an uncompleted building, where the recovered items were found and taken as exhibits.
“On 23 October 2026, SWAT operatives intensified surveillance and patrols in the affected area, leading to the suspect’s arrest. He subsequently led the operatives to an uncompleted building where the stolen items were recovered as exhibits,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigations, the police said, showed that the suspect allegedly admitted to taking part in similar offences on three previous occasions.
The command added that investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crime and identify others who may be involved.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects connected with the crime and recover any additional stolen property,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command’s “unwavering commitment to protecting public assets, safeguarding critical infrastructure and bringing perpetrators of economic sabotage to justice.”
He warned that those behind vandalism would be made to face the law, and urged residents to support security agencies with credible and timely information to help prevent crime and protect public infrastructure.
The police also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, stressing the importance of community participation in crime prevention and building safer communities.
